The Queen of Soul dies.
When it comes to Soul, there are fewer more iconic figures than Aretha Franklin. Such a long and industrious career deserves R.E.S.P.E.C.T.
I was writing this article for the site, when I realised that to get a royalty free image of Aretha online was near impossible. Such is the marketability of her profile. And, with a career spanning so many years, and, with so many iconic hits, it's no wonder!
Speaking of her hits, it all began in the year 1956 with both a single and an album released. The single "Never Grow Old", and the album "Songs of Faith" both did not chart in either the US, Canada, Australia or the UK.
It would take 6 years after this initial foray, that the album, The Tender, the Moving, the Swinging Aretha Franklin would finally make an entry into the US charts, reaching the dizzy heights of number 69.
"I Never Loved A Way The Way I Love You" became her first album success, sharing her equal highest chart position at number 2, in 1967.
Of course, what Aretha is really known for are a handful of universally popular tracks released under the "Atlantic" label. Who can forget tracks such as "Respect", and "Chain of Fools" in 1967, or "I say a little prayer" in 1968?
In all, her main contributions spanned from 1962 until 1998, a total of 36 years. It is worthwhile noting, however, that these were just her prominent years. Her actual career spanned from 1956 until "Rolling in the Deep"(Aretha Version) in 2014, which means that her career spanned a whopping 58 years!
Her last couple of years were marked by poor health, and she eventually turned out her studio lights on August 16, 2018
